The Design Process The Design Process

There are many retailers that will tell you they offer custom jewelry, but how often have you seen truly great custom jewelry? It takes a perfect combination of design talent, artisan craftsmen, and the highest quality materials —ALL of these are at DFW Diamonds. We will not settle for less than the best in our custom jewelry. Most of our customers are referrals from previous happy customers.

The Drawing or CAD Picture
Now you are wondering how to go about getting that design done? It really is easy. You can have an idea of what you want in your head, and all you need to do is sit down with (or email) Amy and she will draw out the ideas you describe. You can take favored parts from old jewelry, or let her draw something completely new. Inspiration comes from everywhere. The drawing we come up with will be very close to actual size and proportions of the final piece. It may also be illustrated in CAD if the details require it.

  The Estimate
Every project we undertake will have a good faith estimate of cost before we begin. This is generally within 10% of the finished price. Greater variations have occurred, but they are generally lower in price than the estimate, and never more than 10% higher. We try hard to get the diamond weight estimates and metal weight estimates right, so there are no surprises.

The Wax Model
Once the idea is settled on and the completed drawing is approved, the next step is the wax model. This will either be by CAD or by hand, depending on the design needs. Neither method is better than the other, they are each better for certain designs. Anyone that tells you one is always better than the other is limiting creativity in their designs and probably doesn’t have access to a great hand carver. Whether the design is done by CAD or by expert hands, you will get to see the finished wax before we move on to the next steps. At this point, we can still make any changes needed to suit your vision of the finished piece.

  The Casting
When the model is approved, the next step is the casting into the metal of your choice.
We use the best alloys of each metal, from all fresh casting grain. Many people would like to use old metal from family jewelry, but the metals are not really good for a new ring as it can cause pitting and other not so pretty casting problems. We can give you credit towards the project or offer other solutions to use the gold in new ways to keep it in the family. (We have hand fabricated many pretty and wearable things from old gold but we do not use old jewelry for casting.)

The Setting and Finishing
Once the casting is complete, the piece moves on to the setting process. All of the diamonds and gemstones are carefully selected to the meet the customer’s needs. Our goal is to provide the customer with the best product possible. We are looking for OOOHHS and AAAHHHHS from everyone who sees the spectacular piece of jewelry that we created just for you.
